Catharsis Market is a darknet marketplace that opened on Tor in the mid-2020s. It is one of several Monero-only general-purpose platforms that have emerged in the fragmented ecosystem following the 2022 takedown of Hydra Market.

Background

Catharsis launched during a phase of the Tor marketplace ecosystem characterised by many small-to-medium platforms rather than a single dominant market. See Darknet marketplace for an overview of this fragmentation pattern.

History

The market opened quietly and gained visibility through Dread posts. By 2025 it had established a stable vendor cohort and had been referenced in annual law-enforcement reports on the Monero-only market segment. [1]

Design

The interface is minimal and server-rendered; v3 onion addresses are used throughout; PGP wrapping of buyer–vendor correspondence is standard. The operators publish a PGP-signed canary at each mirror refresh.

Payment and escrow

Monero only. 2-of-3 multisignature is available for larger orders; classical escrow is the default. For the mechanics see Escrow and multisig; for the Monero multisig handshake specifically, see Monero and privacy coins.

Vendor policies

The vendor policy follows the post-Bayonet consensus: prohibited categories include firearms, services targeting unaffiliated individuals, counterfeit medical products and child sexual abuse material. Vendor bonds are required.

Security

Write-ups about this market repeat a general warning about clone sites. The pattern is described in Phishing and clones.

Reception

Catharsis is referenced in EUROPOL IOCTA reporting from 2024 onward [2] and in the Chainalysis Monero-market commentary.
