WeTheNorth Market (frequently stylised WTN) is a darknet marketplace that opened on Tor in 2021. It is oriented towards a Canadian user base — a departure from the predominantly international focus of most English-language markets. The name references a well-known slogan associated with the Toronto Raptors basketball franchise.
WeTheNorth is one of the few prominent darknet markets to focus on a single national corridor rather than attempt to be international from the outset. Canadian media coverage and statements from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have discussed the site in the context of domestic enforcement priorities.
Background
Prior to WeTheNorth’s launch, Canadian darknet buyers either used large international markets such as the then-dominant Empire or White House Market, or accessed smaller country-neutral platforms. A country-specific market has structural advantages for its users: shorter shipping distances, no customs inspection on domestic parcels and vendor policies tuned to the local legal regime.
History
The site opened in mid-2021. It survived the 2022–2023 collapse of several larger Western markets by not competing in their category. By 2024 WeTheNorth had become the most-referenced Canada-focused market in Canadian media and in RCMP commentary on cryptomarket enforcement. [1]
Design
The interface is bilingual (English and French) and server-rendered. v3 onion addresses are used throughout. PGP wrapping of buyer–vendor messages is standard; the operators maintain a long-lived signing key and publish a PGP-signed canary on each mirror refresh.
Payment
Both Bitcoin and Monero are accepted. 2-of-3 multisig is the default for new orders above a configurable value; classical escrow is retained for lower-value transactions. For the mechanics see Escrow and multisig.
Vendor policies and corridor
The vendor policy explicitly prohibits categories banned by essentially all post-Bayonet markets and additionally restricts certain product classes to Canadian vendors shipping within Canada. European and U.S. vendors are typically present but in smaller numbers; researchers have noted that WeTheNorth remains the most Canada-saturated darknet market in operation.
Media coverage
WeTheNorth has been discussed in Canadian broadcast media (CBC, CTV) as an example of the domestic cryptomarket. RCMP commissioners have mentioned it in parliamentary testimony on online drug trafficking without naming individual vendors.
Security
Write-ups about this market repeat a general warning about clone sites. The pattern is described in Phishing and clones.
